While it sounds like the lead-in to a late night talkshow joke, it really has happened — a sinkhole has opened up on one side of the White House lawn.
Stephen Herman, reporter for Voice of America, posted on Twitter that he had been watching a sinkhole appear on the White House lawn for the past week.
“This week I’ve been observing a sinkhole on the @WhiteHouse North Lawn, just outside the press briefing room, growing larger by the day.” he wrote.

Sinkholes have opened up across Washington, D.C., in recent years. A couple of sinkholes in Washington even forced residents to evacuate from their homes in March, and one swallowed up an entire school bus last year.
This is the first time a sink hole has appeared on the White House lawn, however.
News and photos of the sinkhole set Twitter abuzz with jokes and comments.
The Hellmouth has opened on the @WhiteHouse lawn! 😈 So, @realDonaldTrump's administration's policies are causing Hell to literally open up under the White House! https://t.co/fuaKMOt7PD #Buffy #BuffyTheVampireSlayer #MAGA #DrainTheSwamp pic.twitter.com/5LePYrC4St
